5 Everyday Practices for Healthy, Beautiful Hair
We’ve all heard it – hair care is really important. Our mothers and grandmothers have instilled the idea in us indian girls for generations. From oiling your hair regularly to avoiding harsh chemicals. We are all aware of the dos and don’ts of haircare. But how do we go about taking care of our hair AND our busy schedules? I for one, never find the time to oil my hair regularly or use shikakai. So ladies, I thought it would be fair to discuss hair care practices that are infact feasible for us new age girls – quick easy, everyday practices that will ensure we maintain a healthy mane.
5 EVERYDAY PRACTICES FOR HEALTHY AND BEAUTIFUL HAIR
1. AVOID EXTREMELY HOT SHOWERS
This one is possibly some of the most common mistakes women make. Showering with excessively hot water disrupts the natural moisture balance of the hair, damages the hair follicles and dries out the scalp resulting in weak, brittle hair. Wash your hair with warm water instead. Additionally, it always helps to end your showers with a shot of cold water on your hair to seal your cuticles. I know its winter, ladies, and it feels like absolute torture to stand under an avalanche of cold water but trust me, your hair will thank you later.
2. EAT HIGH PROTEIN FOODS
This is especially difficult for vegetarians. Meats and eggs have very high protein content so it is far easier for non-vegetarians to consumer sufficient protein. Vegetarians need to be a little more creative with their diet to eat sufficient protein so regularly gorge on lentils, beans and soy products such as tofu to pile on your protein intake. Protein is made of amino acids – the building blocks that are essential for healthy hair growth. So, my beauties, make a conscious effort to eat more protein.
3. BRUSH YOUR HAIR BY DETANGLING YOUR ENDS FIRST
Doing this ensures that your can detangle your knots without using excessive force. If your hair tends to get tangled easily, invest in a good quality detangling serum and a soft detangling paddle brush. It is always advisable to brush your hair regularly to avoid excessive tangling and also promote blood circulation in your scalp.
4. DON'T TIE YOUR HAIR TOO TIGHT
I made this mistake as a teenager and it resulted in temporary traction alopecia (hairloss due to constant pulling). Tying your hair in a tight ponytail results in your hair follicles weakening due to constant pulling and can even result in bald patches. It is always a good idea to loosely braid your hair when you sleep or workout so that your hair follicles can breathe. Also, invest in good quality hair bands or scrunchies so that they don’t create any tension on your hair strands.
5. INVEST IN GOOD QUALITY PRODUCTS AND STYLING APPLIANCES FOR YOUR HAIR
Avoid overstyling and use good quality hair products and appliances. This one is really applicable to us new age girls. We love styling our hair and we love experimenting with hair styles. This is why it is extremely important to invest in good quality styling products. Avoid the use of styling products with harsh chemicals. Additionally, you can also invest in products with natural ingredients to give your hair the much needed tender loving care. Using styling appliances on your hair too regularly can also strip off the natural moisture leaving it dry and brittle. Use styling appliances less frequently and if you are hooked on straightening or curling your hair daily, invest in good quality styling appliances.
